With the first full week of 2026 over, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to begin another year with your support behind us. Knowing you continue to stand with Smart Works strengthens our resolve and reminds every member of our team why this work matters.
The challenges facing women this year are already coming into focus. A report from the Resolution Foundation released last week, predicts a further rise in unemployment, which means that for many women the road to securing work is even steeper. Your commitment means we can continue to be there to support these women at a time when it is likely that our service will be needed more urgently than ever.
Next week, we will launch The Gendered Reality of Job Seeking at the House of Lords. This fourth edition of the Smart Works Index lays bare the barriers women face in today’s current recruitment practices —where identity too often shapes opportunity, and where the emotional toll of job seeking is heavier than ever. The findings are stark and reaffirm why our 2026–2030 strategy to raise our voice and influence change in hiring practices is so vital. The full report will be available on our website from 20 January.
At the end of the month, the muchloved Smart Works Truman Brewery fashion sale returns on 31 January and 1 February. It’s a weekend that brings together style, community, and purpose. From vintage treasures to designer pieces and everyday staples, everything is up to 70% off RRP. Find out more and get your tickets here. 100% of the proceeds go towards funding the service Smart Works delivers to address the issues highlighted in our Smart Works Index report
I’m also delighted to share that we have secured new funding from the GLA to launch Smart Works Futures, an initiative that marks an exciting new chapter for us. For the first time, we will be proactively matching our clients with employers and helping them move directly into work. The programme begins this month and will run until September 2026. If you are an employer with vacancies and would like to partner with us, we would love to hear from you. Get in touch via futures@smartworks.org.uk.
Thank you for being part of this mission. Your belief in the potential of women fuels everything we do, and together, we can make 2026 a year of real change
