One Year, 100 Women: smart clothes help women get back to work

An Edinburgh-based charity is celebrating its first year of helping women on low incomes fulfil their dream of getting into the job market by the simple power of wearing smart clothes.

Since its opening in August 2014, Smart Works Edinburgh has assisted more than 100 women, providing work outfits from their stock of high-quality clothes donated by the public, local businesses and retailers. With styling advice and interview training offered too, the support helps women feel more confident and increases their chances of securing jobs.

To mark the successful anniversary, Smart Works Edinburgh is hosting two celebratory evenings at fashion retailer, Hobbs, George Street, Edinburgh, which aim to raise further awareness of the charity and its aims, with special guest speakers, Roseanna Cunningham, Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, Skills and Training and Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne, founder of Genius Foods, on 23rd and 30th September respectively.

Frippy Fyfe, founder of Smart Works Edinburgh, said:

“Once again, our thanks to Hobbs for hosting receptions to raise funds and create awareness of Smart Works. Hobbs have played a large part in helping to establish Smart Works Edinburgh as a charity supporting women back to work in a unique way by boosting confidence as women prepare for interview”

Roseanna Cunningham, Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, Skills and Training, said:

“Preparing for a job interview can be an incredibly stressful experience where any anxieties can feel magnified and overwhelming. Having confidence in how you appear to your prospective employer is a very powerful way to regain that control. Smart Works, Hobbs and their other partners have not only given women interview clothes and advice, they have given them invaluable confidence. I am delighted to join them for their first birthday and look forward to hearing from the women they have helped and the careers they have contributed to”

Smart Works Edinburgh is a Registered Charity, No. SC044520
